DroidFonts.com and new Droid Pro fonts announced by Ascender

Rex from Ascender Corporation pointed us in comments to the new born by Ascender DroidFonts.com. The Droid family of fonts designed by Ascender’s Steve Matteson beginning in the fall of 2006, and made available for the Android platform. DroidFonts.com have been launched to provide more fonts support for Professionals working on the Android platform.

Elk Grove Village, IL — February 12, 2009 — Ascender Corporation, a leading provider of advanced font products and innovative applications for mobile devices, today announced the DroidFonts.com website and the availability of enhanced versions of the Droid family of fonts. Ascender worked closely with Google and the Open Handset Alliance to develop the Droid system fonts for Android, a free, open source, and fully customizable mobile platform. Priced Applications Launched at Android Market

The most awaited feature in Android Market have just been launched today offering to UK and US developers the ability to add priced applications. Developers from these countries can go to the publisher website at http://market.android.com/publish to upload their application(s) along with end user pricing for the apps. Initially, priced applications will be available to end users in the US starting mid next week. More countries will be supported in the coming months.

We will also enable developers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, France, and Spain to offer priced applications later this quarter.  By the end of Q1 2009, we will announce support for developers in additional countries. The second news is that Google Checkout will be used as the payment and billing mechanism for Android Market. Developers who do not already have a Google Checkout merchant account can easily sign up for one via the publisher website. Currently only US and UK are able to sell their products using Google Checkout, so if more countries will be able to sell on Android Market this mean that Checkout will support more countries very soon.

Finally, Android Market for free applications will become available to users in Australia starting February 15th Pacific Time and in Singapore in the coming weeks.  You can now make your applications available in these countries via the publisher website at http://market.android.com/publish.

Garmin-Asus, Strategic Partnership to create Co-branded LBS-centric Mobile Phones

Garmin Asus IconGarmin and Asus have just announced a new strategic partnership to design, manufacture, and distribute co-branded location-centric mobile phones. During a press conference in Taiwan, Garmin and Asus announced that the first model in the Garmin-Asus nüvifone™ series will be shown during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spainn, February 16-19, 2009. The re-branded nüvifone G60 that will be shown will  include a modified version of linux for mobile, but not Android.

“In keeping with the Open Handset Alliance requirements, Garmin-Asus will bring to market a product with Android OS.  However, we haven’t announced a phone with an Android OS yet, and as is our practice, we will not release any details about the product or its availability prior to the product’s launch.” A Garmin-Asus spokesperson told Open Handset Magazine.

All Garmin-Asus nüvifone devices will continue the product vision of the original nüvifone and will be LBS-centric devices that seamlessly connect, communicate and navigate. The original Garmin nüvifone that was announced in 2008 will be re-branded as the Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60. The Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 is expected to be delivered in the first half of 2009, and additional information about the Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 will be released at the Mobile World Congress trade show.

LBS functionality is core to the Garmin-Asus nüvifone series, which will offer the same turn-by-turn, voice-prompted navigation features found on high-end Garmin portable navigation devices (PND). New G1 T-mobile Firmware Update 1.1 RC33 is NOT Cupcake

An admin in the T-Mobile forum posted a thread about the firmware version 1.1 / RC33 that have just been issued. The update will be available to all G1 users in the next two weeks according to the same post. The update includes several bug fixes and feature enhancements, but is not ‘Cupcake’.

Even that the announcement decline the availability of Cupcake in this update, there is at least one feature which is the ability to save MMS content that came from cupcake. The update will include obviously bugfixes and many enhancements, in addition to Google Voice Search for the first time after being available last November in iPhone.

Update will be sent between February 5 and February 15 according to T-Mobile.
