We are starting this week a new section to review some of the new Android applications that have been released in the Android market – and probably old useful ones. This will let you discover some amazing and useful apps if you are not a market-addicted ! Today’s application is a very simple and useful tool to share your coordinates :

Name : Here I Am

Author : Code Sector

Category : Travel

Size : 221 KB

Version 1.0.0

Description : Let people know where you are! This application can send SMS or email with your coordinates and link to Google Maps. This link also opens in Maps application on Android and iPhone, and can be used as an endpoint for driving directions.

OHM Review
Very simple and useful tool that got already 122 ratings with a score of 4.19/5. The application size very small compared to what it does. My wife called asking where I am exactly and “Here I am” answered the question for me. Simply open the application, hold on until it retrieve your GPS location, then send it by email or sms. The message by default include only your coordinates in addition to a link to Google Maps; which compatible with iPhone or Android.

The application have more features than announced, because it can also display your latest known position and the accuracy in time for example mine was registered 7 hours ago – in normal condition this shows a distance. You can also copy the location to be used anywhere else.

Finally, you can choose if the application might resolve the address and send it with the message or send only coordinates. An address will better help to find your location especially if you are sending an sms.

In the latest interview, Brendan mentioned that SDK releases have slowed down and here is today the official Android blog announcing the immediate availability of the new release m3-rc37a. Highlited features in this release :

The ability to inject SMS messages into the emulator, which will allow you to more easily test IntentReceivers for incoming SMS messages (Telnet to Android then run: sms senderPhoneNumber senderPhoneNumber)

Android Debug Bridge (ADB) supports multiple emulators on one host computer

The audio problem with the emulator on Windows should be fixed

There’s a new emulator control panel that you can use to control network events like radio state changes and incoming calls.

The Eclipse plugin now does color syntax highlighting on the XML files, such as AndroidManifest.xml

The new default skin for the emulator is HVGA, portrait mode. That’s the one you should focus on for your submissions for the Android Developer Challenge.

It seems there are problems with com.google.android.providers.media in this release, others are reporting that many applications are not running such contacts, maps, browser and even Xmpp settings. Here all applications are working fine and I’m able to emulate phone call, but not sending sms. We’ll try to update you as we get more information on the subject.

More changes on the release notes, and you can download the latest Android SDK release from Google code. Be sure to update the ADT Eclipse Plugin as usual, instructions available for upgrading the SDK.
